Full Moon in Cancer - January 10th

Compassion is the most clear demonstration of courage.

Cancer is the nurturing instinct, the urge to give and receive love. It is also the part of us that aches most acutely when it feels neglected. With the full moon in this sign, many of us are feeling our emotions to an extreme - and in some cases, exhausting - degree.

Feelings are often the most undervalued of human experiences. Especially in the context of contemporary, western society, people go to great lengths in order to take emotion out of their daily equation. We find our responsiveness to outside influence to be inconvenient or potentially dangerous. We construct ever more firm and rigid walls to protect ourselves from caring too much about others. And when we find ourselves in an impassioned state, we deride ourselves as basket cases.

Just as an experiment let's compare emotional awareness to other human attributes. What if it were okay to simply feel what we feel? What if being sad or afraid or joyful or desirous were as respected as having physical strength? What if it were as well regarded as having a great head for numbers? What if it were held in as high esteem as growing spiritual enlightenment? Our hearts are not an enemy. They are as essential a part of who we are as our bodies, our minds and our spirits. None can exist without the others and the health (or imbalance) of one has an effect on the greater whole.

To experience emotion is to live more fully than we otherwise could. One who is brave enough to honor the heart and its movements will know the difference between merely existing and truly living.
